Purpose and Request:

recommended action

Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) requests retroactive approval from the Board of County Commissioners to allow the ACSO to apply for the Peace Officers Behavioral Health Support and Community Partnerships Grant Program Grant. The grant closed on November 13, 2024, and ACSO has already applied. If awarded, the ACSO requests authorization to accept the grant and requests that the Board of County Commissioners authorize the Chair to sign any award documents or agreements.

Background and Discussion: The ACSO wishes to apply for a grant funded by Colorado Department of Local Affairs to provide funding for the multiple officers and their families using mental health services and would like to continue providing these services as well as expanding to provide the highest quality of care. We would like to send several employees to a wellness conference this year, as well as hosting basic and advanced peer support classes for peace officers which improves the mental health of agencies. ACSO is hoping to become one of the leaders in providing such training.

Fiscal Impact: The grant will contribute ($157,000), which is projected to be the total cost for the project.

Alternatives: The alternative is not to apply for the grant and either find additional funding for these initiatives elsewhere or continue current processes.

Alignment with Strategic Plan:

                     ☐Be fiscally sustainable

                     ☐Provide essential and mandated service

                     ☒Be community focused

Staff Recommendation: The Sheriff’s Office and Administration Bureaus recommend applying for this grant.
