Alignment with Strategic Plan: Good Governance - Deliver mandated and essential services with excellence.

Background and Discussion: The Sheriff’s Office has used several vehicles that were held back from auction for the purposes of training or for spares while critical vehicles are inoperable.  These vehicles are not driven frequently but are necessary to keep operations running smoothly.  The list of vehicles is broken into three main groups: spare vehicles (used when primary vehicle is inoperable), training vehicles (used only for training), and pool vehicles (used by the section as a whole for transport to various duties during the work hours).

Alternatives: The alternatives are limited by category.  If we do not keep the spare vehicles, we will lose capability for that unit when a vehicle is out of service.  The training vehicles allow for quality training to occur without potentially damaging current patrol vehicles.  If we lose the training vehicles, regular patrol vehicles will have to be used in their stead.  Pool vehicles allow staff to travel to necessary functions during their work period when there are tasks off site.  If we do not provide a vehicle to drive for off-site tasks we will be forced to ask staff to use their personal vehicles for county-related work.  This has insurance and taxable income implications.

Fiscal Impact: All of the costs of purchasing these vehicles from auction will be covered by existing Sheriff’s Office budget.
