The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office is seeking approval from the BOCC for the Sheriff to sign the Memorandum of Understanding between the Colorado State Patrol and ACSO to allow Deputies with the Sheriff’s Office to perform Commercial Motor Vehicle Inspections.

Background and Discussion: The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office would like to team up with the Colorado State Patrol to conduct Commercial Motor Vehicle Inspections on Commercial Vehicles traveling on the roadways and highways in Arapahoe County. In years past, the Sheriff’s Office has had Deputies in the Traffic Safety Unit certified in conducting these Commercial Motor Vehicle Inspections. With promotions, transfers, and retirements, however, the traffic unit no longer has anyone certified.
The Colorado State Patrol has recently started the MOU process to make sure everyone is on the same page and conducting these inspections the same way. Currently, all training is conducted and managed through the Colorado State Patrol. The MOU allows our Deputies access to the training classes as well as the State guidelines in order to be authorized to conduct these inspections.
Alternatives: Currently there are no alternatives. Without the training, the Sheriff’s Office will not be able to conduct any inspections on Commercial Motor Vehicles in Arapahoe County.
Fiscal Impact: This training may have minimal cost to become certified by taking training classes and requires little to no additional equipment to get started.

Staff Recommendation: The Sheriff’s Office Public Safety and Administration Bureaus recommend signing the MOU and obtaining necessary training and certifications.
Concurrence: The Sheriff’s Office Administration and Public Safety Bureau are in concurrence with this decision.
