Purpose and Request:
recommended action
Request that the Board of County Commissioners authorize the Chair of the Board and the Sheriff to sign the updated Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) to provide deputy sheriffs to the Littleton Public School District (LPS) to act as School Resource Officers (SROs).

Alignment with Strategic Plan: Safe and Healthy Communities - Advance public safety by strengthening partnerships across law enforcement, emergency response, and community stakeholders.

Background and Discussion: The Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office School Resource Officer Unit works closely with LPS and assigns School Resource Officers to handle criminal complaints, conduct follow up investigations and enforce traffic laws within schools in the school district and surrounding community. School Resource Officers also attend numerous school functions such as PTO meetings and sporting activities. Deputies provide classroom instruction on substance abuse, law-related education and participate in community-related work groups for youth issues, such as truancy. The Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office is a CALEA accredited agency. CALEA accreditation standards require a written agreement governing law enforcement services provided to the School District by the Sheriff's Office. The LPS has agreed to reimburse the Sheriff's Office for half of the cost of the current salary and benefits for each deputy sheriff assigned as a School Resource Officer within the District.
