Background and Discussion: The purpose of this training course is to give the students an understanding of safe and effective motorcycle dynamics by applying them in a slow speed precision course as well as during higher speed motorcycle operations. It is designed to make them safer riders by understanding the capabilities of their motorcycles and their own capabilities. This is done in the hope of possibly preventing accidents and educating the riders.

Most motorcycle riders have never taken a motorcycle safety course and if they have, it is minimal training. This is evident by the unfortunate number of motorcycle crashes that most could have been avoided with some type of advanced training. This course will target defensive and safe motorcycle operations to include emergency braking, obstacle avoidance and motorcycle maneuverability which would raise the rider's confidence and give them an understanding of what a motorcycle can and cannot do. The classes will be instructed by members of the Sheriff's Office Motorcycle Unit that are Motorcycle Instructors. The classes will be two days long and will be held on a weekend (Saturday and Sunday) and the student will have to provide their own motorcycle and safety gear. They will sign a waiver that releases the County of any liability in the case of damage to their motorcycle or injury to themselves or another person.

Fiscal Impact: None.

Alternatives: Not provide the training. The consequence will be that employees and their families will continue to be less safe on roadways.
