Purpose and Request:
recommended action

end
Background and Discussion: The Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office School Resource Officer Unit works closely with Byers School District and Deer Trail School District and assigns School Resource Officers to handle criminal complaints, conduct follow up investigations and enforce traffic laws within schools within those school districts and the surrounding communities. School Resource Officers also attend numerous school functions such as PTO meetings and sporting activities. Deputies provide classroom instruction on substance abuse, law-related education and participate in community-related work groups for youth issues, such as truancy. The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office is a CALEA accredited agency. CALEA accreditation standards require a written agreement governing law enforcement services provided to the School Districts by the Sheriff’s Office.
Alternatives: The alternative would be to not enter into the Intergovernmental Agreements and not provide SRO services in these school districts.
Fiscal Impact: No changes from current costs.
Alignment with Strategic Plan:
☐Be fiscally sustainable
☒Provide essential and mandated service
☒Be community focused
Concurrence: The Byers and Deer Trail School Districts are in concurrence with this request.
