Alignment with Strategic Plan: Safe and Healthy Communities - Advance public safety by strengthening partnerships across law enforcement, emergency response, and community stakeholders.
Background and Discussion: The Crisis Incident Response Team (CIRT) has recently gained attention in the community due to a number of officer - and deputy - involved shootings in the 18th Judicial District (Arapahoe County). The CIRT is comprised of investigators and detectives from agencies throughout the county and is responsible for fact-finding investigations related to a shooting or a death when force used on someone in custody. The evidence from the investigation will eventually be presented to the District Attorney who will render a decision about the appropriateness of the force based on Colorado Revised Statutes.
It is important to know that this investigation is separate from a criminal investigation of events leading up to the shooting and is also separate from any agency-specific investigation into proper use of force per agency policy.
