The Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office is interested in applying for the COSSAP grant offered through the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA). The Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office is requesting that the Board of County Commissioners authorize the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office to accept funds from the COSSAP grant.

Background and Discussion: The COSSAP grant is formerly the Comprehensive Opioid Abuse Program (COAP) which was developed as part of the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) legislation. The purpose of the COSSAP grant is to offer financial and technical support to local governments and/or expand current services to those that have been impacted by Substance Use Disorder (SUD). The ultimate goal of the COSSAP grant is to enhance the collaboration and partnerships on a public health level, behavioral health level, and public safety level. The COSSAP grant will promote public safety, enhance data collection and information sharing, maximize resources, and prevent SUD. The Sheriff's Office is working with a possible partnering organization to develop the grant and, if approved, would plan to expand the current program funded through the JBBHS grant to add in additional discharge planning and peer recovery services. Additionally, there may be the possibility to add, establish, and support community and/or family connections for people after they are released from custody.
Alternatives: The only alternative is not to accept the funds.
