Purpose and Request:

recommended action

The Public Safety Bureau seeks the Board’s approval to sell one retired vehicle to the Town of Bennett.

Background and Discussion: The Sheriff’s Office is retiring marked patrol unit 5707/FA# 302683, which has just been replaced for 2021.  Instead of sending the retired vehicle to a public auction, the Sheriff’s Office wants to support our community partners by selling the used vehicle to the Town of Bennett, for which the Sheriff’s Office provides contract law enforcement services. The Town of Bennett, a small local entity that lacks funding for buying this vehicle new, is implementing a “Community Services Officer” position to assist law enforcement in handling low-level, routine duties which are very similar to the Sheriff’s Office Community Services Specialist position. The creation of this position will assist the Sheriff’s Office in providing high quality services by reducing the workload and potentially response times for Deputies. The vehicle Bennett would like to acquire for this position is marked patrol unit 5707, a 2017 Interceptor SUV with 61K miles. The estimated auction value of this vehicle is estimated at $10,500 - $12,000 by David Wiley at Roller Auctions

Fiscal Impact: None, regardless of whether the vehicle is sold to Bennett or sold at public auction, the financial return to Arapahoe County is expected to be the same.

Alternatives: If the Sheriff’s Office does not sell this vehicle to the Town of Bennett, it will be disposed of through the normal auction process.

Alignment with Strategic Plan:

                     Be fiscally sustainable

                     Provide essential and mandated service

                     Be community focused

Staff Recommendation: Sheriff Brown and the Sheriff’s Office Public Safety Bureau recommend selling the vehicle to the Town of Bennett.

Concurrence: Facilities and Fleet Management is in concurrence with this decision.
